Porquê este nome para a vossa banda?
Other Eyes Wise significa a luta entre uma perspectiva individual e as pressões externas. Refere-se ao ponto de vista individual e ao facto de não se seguir sempre o outro. Gostamos do nome porque vemos a nossa forma de fazer música exactamente desta maneira, como uma colectividade de indivíduos - gostamos de trabalhar juntos, mas permitimos que surja qualquer ideia de um membro do grupo, e acreditamos que isso nos dá força.

Temos imensas influências de diversas áreas, estas são as principais que nos inspiram desde o início, mas temos uma mente aberta relativamente ao que ouvimos.
Local onde mais gostaria de vir a tocar um dia:
Tocar num enorme festival de heavy metal portanto, basicamente, tocar num grande campo cheio de verdadeiros fãs de música. É um óptimo contexto de música.
MC: Também gostava de tocar num locar tipo o Garage, Brixton Academy, onde te encontras muito perto da audiência.
Lembram-se do vosso primeiro ensaio? Onde foi?:
Sim, era uma sala de ensaio de m*rda a norte de Londres. O local estava no mesmo estado que a banda, prestes a se unir. Ironicamente, o Jonas e o Simon tocavam numa outra banda, o Jonas era o vocalista e o Simon na bateria.
S.J: este foi o primeiro ensaio de sempre onde ouvi o Jonas a tocar guitarra, e tínhamos um novo tipo no baixo. A partir desse primeiro ensaio, mesmo sendo o local uma m*erda, achamos que tinha sido muito produtivo e criativo e logo a partir dessa primeira sessão, apercebemo-nos que tínhamos algo com potencial ali.
JH: Decidimos reunir-se sem qualquer ideia ou expectativa de que iria acontecer. Imediatamente nos apercebemos que era algo que poderia resultar e se transformar em algo de bom.
Quem compõe as músicas
Todos nós. Alguém aparece com uma ideia de base e trabalhamos todos nela, juntos. Assim que uma ideia surge, em 9 de 10 vezes, alguém pega nela, desenvolve-a e, gradualmente, torna-se numa música. Nós compomos de uma forma muito pouco restrita, e tudo se resume à ideia individual que surge, algo que possivelmente irão ouvir na nossa música e é o que, novamente, se reflecte na escolha do nome da banda.
Quem escreve as letras?
JH. : Eu. Mas baseio-me na inspiração e nas ideias dos outros.
Que poster/mensagem gostariam de ver a ser erguida pelo publico enquanto tocam?
SJ: A bandeira do Liverpool FC :-) Honestamente era mais um monte de bandeiras de diferentes países. Mas só ter um público grande o suficiente para ter esse tipo de resposta é o suficiente para me fazer feliz.
JH: se alguém tivesse, por puro acidente, pegado numa minha letra mais pessoal e impresso num pedaço de papel e levantasse. Esse tipo de conexão seria fantástica.
MC: ver um da minha cidade natal, enquanto tocava no estrangeiro.
A pergunta de sempre ... como se conheceram e como decidiram começar esta banda?
SJ: Eu e o Coop já nos conhecemos praí há 20 milhões de anos, e estivemos juntos em diferentes bandas durante esse período. Eu e o Jonas estivemos numa outra banda metal. Sempre quis fazer algo um pouco de diferente, é por isso que queria começar com os Other Eyes Wise.
JH: Conheci o Simon numa outra banda metal, onde eu cantava/rugia. Mas estava ansioso por começar um outro projeto com ele. Tínhamos conversado anteriormente sobre um ato de metal que também se desviasse para o rock e que fosse multidimensional, aos meus olhos lembrava-me os atos progressistas que amo, mas num ambiente mais pesado.
Aos Other Eyes Wise o FLAMES pergunta...
Sentem que, hoje em dia, as pessoas se encontram mais abertas ao metal?
JH: sim, as pessoas parecem estar mais abertas ao metal e, em geral, a uma cultura mais alternativa. Vejo mais pessoas a usar tatuagens e piercings do que via há 10 anos atrás, penso que as pessoas em geral (apesar de não serem todas) estão com as mentes mais abertas. A parte da escrita do metal, e a música em geral, está a tornar-se saturada, o que é um risco para a música e para o que a música é suposto ser, isto numa perspectiva individual. Agora, apreciem a resposta do Sy's: uma caixa de Pandora vai abrir-se...
SJ: Penso que, em geral, todos os tipos de música têm crescido tanto nos últimos anos, e o mesmo se passou com o metal. Mas a criatividade desta música está a desaparecer lentamente, e é cada vez mais difícil encontrar algo que seja novo, parece que todos andam a usar a mesma fórmula. Penso que os verdadeiros fãs de música, independentemente do género, irão procurar e encontras as bandas que são realmente criativas, e essa música nunca irá morrer. Vejam os Meshuggah, não são nada ortodoxos nem seguem as principais correntes do momento e continuam a ter seguidores.
Sobre o que é que gostam de cantar?
JH: sobre as minhas visões pessoais e observações. Por exemplo: a You're Wrong, You're Right é a resposta a um diálogo pessoal para corrigir uma descrença em mim mesmo. A Vague Monster é sobre um padrão na sociedade em se usar uma máscara, o que não tem mal, mas não quando se sobrepões à nossa parte interior, que é quando a verdadeira parte se desmorona. Tende a ser sobre coisas reais, não sobre ficção, pelo menos não neste álbum.
Quando iniciaram esta aventura, alguma vez imaginaram que chegariam tão longe?
JH: Sim, não tinha ideia de onde estávamos a ir, só podia ter a certeza de que seria longe de onde estávamos. O facto de estarmos onde hoje não é, num certo sentido, é uma surpresa, devido à forma como é nos sentíamos bem no início, mas também não o podia prever.
SJ: Acho que desde o primeiro demo que fizemos até a este álbum, senti que isto era forte o suficiente para nos levar para a frente, mas honestamente não esperava que acontecesse estarmos onde estamos agora.
Como se imaginam daqui a 10 anos?
Sabemos que teremos progredido musicalmente. Neste momento não sabemos em que sentido, o que também torna tudo mais excitante. Esperamos ternos tornado mais bem sucedidos e de termos uma ligação mais forte com o público. Enquanto fizermos música, sabemos que iremos progredir, mas haverá sempre um factor aleatório ao que realmente sai: agora, quando tentamos escrever uma música de heavy, acaba por ser a coisa mais melódica que já ouviu, e quando tentamos escrever uma balada, acabamos com um colapso brutal. Portanto, basicamente, o que vemos daqui a 10 anos é um futuro que não podemos ver. Enquanto existir um público para nós, nós estaremos lá.
SJ: Provavelmente também teremos mais uma porr*da de tatuagens.
Existem artistas com os quais gostariam de tocar?
Metallica seria um bónus, Tool, Meshuggah, Tesseract, Dream Theater, Joe Bonamassa, Tori Amos,....basicamente muitas bandas e artistas, porque amamos estar atolados e não temos quaisquer limites.
JH: Também amava tocar com os Devin Townsend e Mastodon, porque parecem ser brutais para se sair!
Vocês acabaram de assinar através dos WormHole Death e o vosso primeiro álbum Zer(0) vai ser lançado através deles. Quais são as vossas prespectivas para o futuro?
Antes de mais gostaríamos de agradecer o Carlo, Wahoomi e todo o pessoal dos WormHoleDeath e RealSound Studio pelo seu apoio. Estamos ansiosos por progredir com a banda, musicalmente e mentalmente. Produzir a melhor música e concertos o que pudermos, e com a ajuda deles, chegar a tantos lugares quanto possível e mostrar às pessoas quem somos e o que conseguimos fazer.

Other Eyes Wise means the struggle between an individual perspective and external pressures. It's about individual point of views, and to not always follow other people. We like the name, because we view our way of making music in this very way, as being a collective of individuals – we like working together, but we allow any idea from any person in the band to come through, and this gives us strength we believe.

We have a lot of influences from a lot of different areas, these are the main, early inspirational ones, but we have a very open mind towards what we listen to.
Place where you dream to play one day:
Playing a massive heavy metal festival, so basically playing on a large field filled with true fans of music. It's a great context for music.
MC: I would also love to play a place like the Garage, Brixton Academy, where you are close to the crowd.
Do you remember your first rehearsal? Where was it:
Yes, it was a shitty rehearsal room in north London. The place was in the same state as the band, just about to come together. Ironically, Jonas and Simon played in another band, Jonas on vocals, Simon on drums.
S.J: this was the first rehearsal where I heard Jonas on guitar ever, and we had a new guy on bass. From that first rehearsal, even if the place was shit, we found it very productive and creative, and already after that one session, we realized we had something with potential there.
JH: We decided to meet up with no idea or expectation on where it would go. Straight away, we learned it was something that could work and turn into something good.
Who composes the music
All of us. Someone comes with a basic idea, and then we jam on it, and evolve it, together. Once an idea comes in, 9 times out of 10, someone else picks up on it, evolves it, and it gradually becomes a song. We compose music in a very unrestrictive way, and it's about the individual ideas coming through, something that you probably can hear in our music, and again reflects the choice of band name.
Who writes the lyrics?
JH. : me. But it take inspiration and ideas from the others.
What poster/message would you like to see being lifted up in the audience while you are playing?
SJ: Liverpool FC flag :-) Honestly, more like loads of flags for different countries. But just having a big enough audience to have that kind of response, is enough to make me happy.
JH: if someone had, by pure accident, picked my most personal lyric and printed that on a piece of paper and held up. That kind of connection would be awesome.
MC: to see one from my home town, as I'm playing abroad.
The usual question ... how did you meet and how did you decide to start this band?
SJ: myself and Coop have known each other for twenty million years, and been in different bands together over that period. I and Jonas met in another metal band. I always wanted to do something a bit different, that's why I wanted to start up Other Eyes Wise.
JH: I met Simon in another metal band, where I sang/growled. But I was keen to start another project with him. We had talked earlier about basically a metal act that also veered towards rock, and being multidimensional, in my eyes reminding me of the progressive acts I love, but in a heavier setting.
To the Other Eyes Wise, FLAMES asks
Do you feel that nowadays people are more open to metal?
JH: yes, people seem to be more open to both a metal, and in general, a more alternative culture. I see more people having tattoos and piercing than I did 10 years ago, I think people in general (though not everyone) is getting more openminded. The writing part of metal, and music in general, is becoming saturated, which is a risk for music and what music is meant to be about, an individual view. Now, enjoy Sy's answer: can of worms is about to open....
SJ: I think, generally, all sorts of music has gone so much bigger over the recent years, and so has metal. But the creativity of this music is slowly disappearing, and it's harder and harder to find something that feels new, it seems it's all going through the same formula. I think real music fans, whichever genre, will go out and find the really creative bands, and this music will never die. Look at Meshuggah, they are unortodox and not mainstream, and they still have a following.
What do you like to sing about?
JH: it's my personal views and observations, examples:
You're Wrong, You're Right: this is the response to a personal dialogue, to aim to correct a disbelief in oneself.
Vague Monster: is about a pattern in society with wearing a mask, which is fine, but not when it takes over whilst the internal, true part falls apart.
It tends to be about very real things, not much fiction, at least not on the current album.
When you started this journey, have you ever imagined that you would go this far?
JH: yes, I had no idea where we were gonna go, I could only be sure that it was gonna be far away from where we were. That we are where we are today is in one sense not a surprise due to how good it felt from the start, but I couldn't foresee it.
SJ: I think from the first demo we did, up to this album, I felt it was strong enough to take us forward, but I honestly didn't expect where we are now to happen.
How do you see yourself in 10 years from now?
We know we will have progressed musically. We don't know in what way right now, which also makes it exciting. We hopefully have become more and more successful, and have a strong connection with a large audience. As long as we do music, we know we will progress, and there will always be a random factor to what actually comes out: now, when we try to write a heavy song, it ends up being the most melodic thing you've heard, and when we try to write a ballad, we end up with a brutal breakdown. So basically, what we see in 10 years time is a a future we can't see. As long as there is an audience for us, we'll still be around.
SJ: probably a shitload more tattoos as well.
Are there any artists you would like to play with?
Metallica would be definite bonus, Tool, Meshuggah, Tesseract, Dream Theater, Joe Bonamassa, Tori Amos,....basically, a lot of bands and artists, because we love to jam, and we don't have any boundaries.
JH: I'd also love to play with Devin Townsend and Mastodon, because they seem like a blast to hang out with!
You have just signed to the heavy label WormHole Death and you will release your debut album Zer(0) through them…What are your perspectives for the future?
First and foremost, we would like to thank Carlo, Wahoomi and all the guys at WormHoleDeath and RealSound Studio for their backing and support.
We are looking forward to band progression, musically and mentally. Just to produce the best music and shows we can, and with the help of the label, get out to as many places as possible and show people who we are and what we can do.
